Do i relieve the pressure to change the fuel filter?

i have a 2000 ford explorer and its been having problems. it was reving real bad and wouldn't accelerate when i put my foot on the gas and now when i turn it on it'll kinda stall for a few seconds then die. people are saying i might need a new feul pump, but to change the filter first cause it's cheaper.. but im having troube changing that. it wont come off... how do i relieve the pressure so i can take it off? (theres no bolts on the line to relieve pressure.. im new to this n im not quite sure wat to do)Do i relieve the pressure to change the fuel filter?
Top of the motor on the fuel rail there is a valve similar to the valve on your tire this will release the fuel pressure .You can get a small plastic tool from the parts store to remove the filter from the lines .Do i relieve the pressure to change the fuel filter?
Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay then start the vehicle and wait till it dies. Fuel pressure is relieved,

Those lines can be tough to get off sometimes.Do i relieve the pressure to change the fuel filter?
you should relieve the pressure but it wouldnt prevent you from changing the filter. Your fuel lines have a retaing clip inside that you need a tool for or a couple of small screw drivers to release the clip.Do i relieve the pressure to change the fuel filter?
There's a valve on the fuel rail you can relieve the pressure there,it looks like a tire valve stem. Even with pressure on the lines the filter can still be removed.Do i relieve the pressure to change the fuel filter?
If you don't mind getting a little messy, you can remove and replace the filter without relieving the pressure. Even when the pressure is removed, some fuel can still escape.

Regardless, just have some rags handy and be careful not to damage any rubber fuel hoses while doing so.Do i relieve the pressure to change the fuel filter?
what i do is take the gas cap off to releave the pressure.Do i relieve the pressure to change the fuel filter?
i never do and i have done hundreds of those filters. your problem does not sound like it is related to a bad filter. there is a release tool to pull the lines off of that filter. that is the problem

  • How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug?

Trying to change my fuel pump, but need to drain the gas first. How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug?
You have to use the gas up, there is no further option. You can wait over a long period of time and let it dissolve on its own. Other than that there is no other option. How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug?
You can get a line to connect to the fuel rail, jump the relay with a wire and let it drail into a gas can. It will take a while to drain but you can empty as much as you need to safely lower the tank.

If you look on the side of the fuel rail you will see a screw on port for a fuel pressure gauge, just get a line that fits onto it, you can bring the cap with you to the store to make sure it will fit on the rail so you don't need to make multiple trips. How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug?
You don't need to drain the gas,use a floor jack to lift the gas tank up and down hardest part is getting the gas tank to balance on the floor jack.It works great if you can have one person on each side of the tank to help balance it when it's lowering down and raising up.

Jumping the fuel pump with straight power to drain the tank won't work if your fuel pump is not workingHow do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug?
Get a syphon pump for a boat gas tank at a marine store or walmart, it will be a simple line with a sqweeze bulb. sqweeze the bulb to syphon the fuel out, you can transfer it to anothers car tank and put the rest in a 5 gallon can for youself to get back to gas station when repair is done, dont try to take off tank full of gas cuz you could spill it everywere, plus much hevier and makes the job a pain, the syphon pump is real cheap. How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug?
This is one of those things I wish had a drain plug. I cannot tell you how many times my best friend and I had to take my gas tank off my Jeep Cherokee because of a bad fuel pump, broken hose and then to discover a relay had been the culprit.

You will either have to drive the vehicle to burn the gas or drop the tank.

For my BF and I luckily he had a lift and equipment to lower the tank down without breaking our arms and backs- empty or not.

One way that we did drain gas out was jumping the fuel relay and draining gas out from the fuel rail. I only recommend doing this IF you know what you are doing. How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug?
Simply amazing, some of the other comments made....... I digress, get it up on a lift if possible, stands at least. The higher the better, by letting the rear axle hang down as far as possible, place a floor jack under the gas tank and loosen the straps. Now you can reach over the axle and remove the pump. There is no reason to drain the gas to change the pump. How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug?
I used one of those hoses with a pump that you squeeze with your hand. You can get these at most auto parts stores. If the hose will not go all the way to the tank, you can remove the filler hose at the tank then put the hose in there. Then removed the tank. You can pour what is left out your filler neck. How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug?
pick up a siphon pump from any local auto parts store. Pump the gas into a container. Drop the tank and change the pump.

EDIT: the guy above me has a much better solution if it works. If not then drain as stated. How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug?
Don't worry about draining the gas if your just changing the fuel pump.

Just take off the gas line and plug it or just let the gas drain into a coffee can.

You'll only loose a little gas if your good at it.How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug?

You have to pull the tank.

How do you know when your fuel pump needs to be changed, in a 1992 dodge caravan?

When you have a no start condition. Check your fuse 1st in the fuse panel, if it is good, then go down to the tank and find the power wire to the pump. After you have replaced the filter, and tested the relays as well as the pump pressure with and without the pressure regulator, then you can better answer that question.

If the pump is noisy, or has quit before (be sure it is the pump) then started back, or if you havr a whole bunch of miles on the car, replace it if you want the peace of mind.

There is no specified service interval for replacement though.

98 Chevy malibu theft system? no fuel seems to be the problem?

how can i tell if the theft system is keeping the car from starting. The car wont start out of the blue. I opened up the air filter and sprayed in starter fluid, started right up, but dies when i stop spraying. This leads me to think its a fuel problem. Changed fuel filter, and pump is working fine. Any help would be great.98 Chevy malibu theft system? no fuel seems to be the problem?
I had the same problem with a Geo prism LSI. To my surprise it turned out to be the coil pack. I always thought that when it went bad there would be no spark, it turns out, there is just less and Ether is so combustible it will burn on even the smallest spark and the engine will start, but then die very quickly (gasoline will just spit and sputter) .98 Chevy malibu theft system? no fuel seems to be the problem?
it was a theft system problem the security light will flash and will not start no matter what u spray in it how do u know the pump is working on a GM especialy it may have some fuel pressure but if it is even 1to2 pounds low it wont run u need a pressure test and volume test and i bet you will find something wrong gl

Check under the rear seat for a inspection window. Though this window you can change the fuel pump and screen without needing to remove the whole tank. How easy is it to pull of a gas tank to and replace the pump and screen on a 91 Plymouth acclaim?
If memory serves me BRUNO KUSSLER got it wrong. The LH cars had that feature, not the acclaim. On the Acclaim you have to drop the tank to get to the pump. Drain the tank(sometimes easier said than done) Disconnect all the lines and hoses you see, then drop the tank low enough to get to the top lines and wire connection on top and unplug. Drop it down and unscrew the retainer ring and lift the pump assembly out.

Is it hard to change the timing on a fuel injector?

i have a 1992 ford f350 7.3 litter diesel and ive had the fuel pump, fuel lines, alternater, batteries, fuel fillter and glow plugs changed and it still wont start but only in the mornings. After its started it will run fine the rest of the day and my buddy told me the fuel injector timing was off and i was wondering if that could be it or not,and if so how hard it is to change itIs it hard to change the timing on a fuel injector?
I'm not aware of any way to modify the injector timing - this comes from your computer. While there are some devices that can modify the way your computer responds, the injector pulse width is normally driven by values in a table based on the performance desired and known variables relating to your engine and the vehicle specs.

I didn't see pressure regulator mentioned in your lengthy list of repairs? Have you verified the fuel rail pressure? I would place injector timing at the bottom of my list of probable issues. (Unless there's a TSB for this.)Is it hard to change the timing on a fuel injector?
You might want to see if the fuel lines are placed correctly. That can cause your mornings hard starts.

The timing should only be done by your local fuel shop.

  • How do i remove the back seat of my Lexus ES300?

I have a 2000 Lexus ES300 i need to remove the backseat but not sure how to do that....Need to change the Fuel PumpHow do i remove the back seat of my Lexus ES300?
Most rear seats in cars can be removed by examining the underside bottom, front lip area of the seat cushion at the front outer edges of the seat. There's usually a hook on either side of it's inner metal framing that engages a metal plate welded to the floor to keep it in place. You may have to feel around under the seat to find it. By pushing downwards and backwards on the seat cushion in those areas ....one side at a time..., you can usually disengage the hook from that plate and then lift the seat cushion up and out. Some cars have it bolted in place instead of a hook. The rear seat back cushion is usually bolted to the metal structure behind it...look for a bolt in either lower corner of the seat back...unscrew the bolts and then lift the seat back cushion forward at the bottom and push up to disengage it at the top.

Reverse the order to reinstall. How do i remove the back seat of my Lexus ES300?
pull up on the seat bottom to try to see between it and the carpet.

should be a white tab looking block on each side of the front of the lower seat bottom. you push on the button on it with a screwdriver and the seat should pull up (might have to pull while you push).

then the seat bottom should come up.

    JEEP YJ 4.2 -1988 - ENGINE question?

I just got almost for free Jeep 1988 4.2 . Did not run . I started changed fluids , oil etc , and engine is knocking like woodpicker .

To me soung like broken lifter ( my friends have same opinion ).

I know I shoud change camshaft and lifters . My question is -

-do I need remove engine head to do this job?

-maybe better idea is to buy another engine from junk-yard instal , use for while and in same time rebiuld this knocking ? -Any idea how much cost used complite engine -some links?

-how about remanufactired engines -avaliable on line for about $1400 ? -Are they OK -is it good price ?

I never had Jeep before , I like this vehicycle a lot , I would brigh this vehicycle to life again .

I know how to do most job , I just need good advices .

I will be happy if someone will give me some links about problem above , some advices .

How much will cost me to buy all parts needed to rebiuld engine by myself ?

Another problem with Jeep. I have automatic transmition -is OK-but when I stop on red light many times engine dies . Normal RPM is about 600 as should be . I did not do tune-up yet . Maybe is needed .

What is your opinion about this problem ?

Maybe I need change fuel pump ? Or maybe is some adjustment on this pump ?

And last question , power stering . When engine is warm , power steering does not work as good as when is cold . Is there some adjastment on power steering pump ?

Any help is needed . Thank you .JEEP YJ 4.2 -1988 - ENGINE question?
Sounds to me like you might have a cracked flex-plate which can simulate the exact same noise as a lower engine knock. This could also be causing you transmission problem i would remove the inspection cover on the transmission bell housing spiflex-platexplate around and check for any cracks. On the power steering issue sounds like the fluid is reaching its boiling point after it warms up which it could be contaminated with water or something since it hasent been running. I would recommend draining the fluid and refilling it and also add some lucas power steering fluid and see what happens.JEEP YJ 4.2 -1988 - ENGINE question?
    Hi

For your power steering, any adjustment would be on the steering box

And I think your rpm`s should be up to about 850. For the knock, put in two qt/liter of transition fluid in the oil. (Take out about 2 qt) It is

mostly detergent and may clean the lifters. Its worth a try ! And leave

it in for a few days.

How do you remove air from my gas line in my 95' s10 chevy?

i was wondering how do you remove the air in my gas line? i changed the gas line and fuel tank a few weeks ago and ever since my truck has been stalling and jerking me around really bad. well i did rearch and it said its either the fuel pump or air in the lines. well im going to try to get the air out first and if that dont work i will change the fuel pump? could anybody tell me how to get air out the lines? How do you remove air from my gas line in my 95%26039; s10 chevy?
Try turning the key on and off several times without starting...leave it on in between for several seconds. The fuel pressure regulator should purge any air out through the return line to the tank. Do a pressure test on the system at the test port of the fuel rail....could be a bad pressure regulator also. How do you remove air from my gas line in my 95%26039; s10 chevy?
if you have been driving the truck for a few weeks then there should be no air left in the lines your fuel pump will pump gas through and push the air outHow do you remove air from my gas line in my 95%26039; s10 chevy?
Change the fuel filter its possible a chunk of crap got stuck in it when changing the tank i would also check the fuel pump and/or replace it.

I have an 86' chevrolet blazer s-10 2.8 fuel injected 4x4 , do you need a certain amount of gas to crank?

i changed the fuel pump and cleaned tank how much gas does it need to crank up and do you have to prime it? if so how many timesI have an 86%26039; chevrolet blazer s-10 2.8 fuel injected 4x4 , do you need a certain amount of gas to crank?
I think the gas tank is smaller like 15 gallons. And shaped different so if the total was 5 gallons it would be enough to just get started. The fuel pump would run when energized by ignition switch ON. Then the pump would continue until the fuel hose is full, which then increases pressure.

The pump runs until the pressure is high enough for the fuel pressure switch and regulator.

You can turn the ignition ON until the pump stops. Then OFF. Then ON once more and the fuel pump won't run as long because the air is out, and the pressure is high now.

Do I need any special wrenches. Do I need to pull the fuse on the pump before removal or ground? Is it also under any extreme pressure?Where is it located, and how do I change fuel filter on a 1999 Pontiac Trans Am.?
Along the frame at the rear of the vehicle in front of the gas tank.

Yes it is under pressure. Remove the fuel pump fuse and start the engine. After it has stalled out restart it again and make sure that it fails to start. Remove the filter.

Wear safety glasses while performing this operation.Where is it located, and how do I change fuel filter on a 1999 Pontiac Trans Am.?
Fuel filter should be drivers side rear on the inside of the frame rail. Remove fuel pump fuse and crank motor a couple seconds to relieve pressure. DO NOT USE TROUBLE LIGHT. If gas spills on light it will ignite. Use flashlight or similar battery powered light just to be safe. If the filter is original, you may need tubing wrenches to avoid rounding fittings.

How do you test the fuel injectors 2.2L DOHC 2002 chevy cavalier?

my car died on us like 20 times tryin to get home. it sounds like it's not getting enough gas or it's running out of gas. i know it's not out of gas. it was also backfiring and going 10 MPHs. Just changed the fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, oxygen sensor(bank 1). Is it possible dirt, or something might have gotten by the filter before and clogged the line from the filter to the injectors? or are the injectors bad?How do you test the fuel injectors 2.2L DOHC 2002 chevy cavalier?
Test the injector resistance, should be very low. The best way to test injectors is to run an ahmmeter check when running to see what the maximum current through them is. That stated it is improbable that injectors cause this as they really have got these things figured out. More likely causes of this are corroded or open spark plug wires or coils or both. Why did you change all those parts? Guess work or was something wrong with everything? Check what was stated here and then get the PCM scanned for clues as to what is ailing your car. These cars had a problem with grounds at the battery and the frame rail below the battery that caused a lot of strange problems. You need to properly diagnose before parts are replaced. Good luck. How do you test the fuel injectors 2.2L DOHC 2002 chevy cavalier?
    Have you put in a lot of %26quot;octane booster%26quot; or %26quot;Fuel cleaners%26quot;?

Checking Fuel Injectos requires a comp scanner and some special test equipment- consult a qualified repair shop.

ASE Cert Auto TechHow do you test the fuel injectors 2.2L DOHC 2002 chevy cavalier?
you can measure the resistance (ohms) of each injector. disconnect each injector and use an ohm meter across the injector terminals. should be 11 to 14 ohms. this will only tell you if the injector coil is good not if they are plugged.

fuel pump fault (anyone know how i can fix this )?

i have a ford transit 2.5 Di it started spluttering on occasions over1-2 months then it didn't start i was told it was the pump so i changed the pump i have been told it is something to do with the immobilizer because the second pump was off another van

(anyone know how i can fix this )? fuel pump fault (anyone know how i can fix this )?
yes it will be the immobiliser built into modern injection pumps, you can get it reprogrammed at main Ford dealer or a good auto-electrician will sort it .... fuel pump fault (anyone know how i can fix this )?
I dont think its that it might just need bleeding fuel pump fault (anyone know how i can fix this )?
i don't see how the immobiliser would be the problem as that should be connected to the electrics noot the fuel system. the second pump could also be faulty, the glow plugs might need changing, the fuel system might need bleeding (although most modern Diesel's self bleed now, there may still be a manual hand pump under the bonnet somewhere), or there may just be some crap in the fuel system fuel pump fault (anyone know how i can fix this )?
With all diesel problems you need to do a process of elimination...I think first of all rig up a gravity fall of clean diesel or clean out your tank and pipe lines.....If the problem is still there then remove your injectors and get them cleaned...This will cost a few pounds but well worth it....To me, by the sound of what you say an injector could be the problem.......Don't use easy start, it will ruin your engine for good. Have you done the simple things like change the fuel filter....and if you have is it fitted correctly...Its difficult to say what is wrong over the net...

Changing a FUEL FLITER on a 2005 Jetta GLI 1.8?

Does any one know how to change a fuel pump on a 05 Jetta GLI 1.8 turbo. I have change one before on my GMC truck but I don't know where it is located on this car. Also are their any tricks I shoudl know about?

We us the best gas. The only reason I'm going to replace the fuel filter is becasue Aamco said it was bad and that might be because the O2 sensor is bad and they are getting a bad reading. I'm not going to pay them 570 to change two O2 sensor and a fuel filter. I know I have to change the O2 sensors and will be doing that also.Changing a FUEL FLITER on a 2005 Jetta GLI 1.8?
The fuel pump is in the gas tank, so you have to drop the tank, which is difficult to do safely. Need to release fuel pressure first and to do this you remove fuel pump solenoid relay from fuse box in engine compt. and try to start engine. Once engine dies from lack of fuel turn key off, replace solenoid then proceed to replace fuel filter and or fuel pump. Is vehicle still under warranty?

You wouldnt change a fuel pump on a diesel yourself. if you are referring to the injector pump, then the incorrect timing can have a devestating effect on your engine.

fuel pump, high pressure or low pressure? Low pressure side is normally a lift pump within the tank or inline with fuel lines, high pressure is fitted to the engine and abit more difficult to change.

Some of the earlier VW's were only fitted with a vacuum pump which when the engine was cranked the injector pump would lift the fuel through the filter and gravity would take over and hold the fuel in limbo to say.

How can you tell a fuel pump is going bad on a 97 Astro van? What can be done to prevent them? Change 2 so far

Running out of gas is the most common cause...in-tank fuel pumps need fuel to help cool them during operation. You could be getting defective pumps, the strainer may be allowing debris to get sucked up or may have a wiring issue causing too much voltage or poor ground also. How can you tell a fuel pump is going bad on a 97 Astro van? What can be done to prevent them? Change 2 so far
The pump will start to intermittently fail. You won't hear the humming noise of the pump priming when you turn the key on.

Best way to keep this from happening is to never let the fuel get below 1/4 tank. The fuel is the only thing that cools the pump so if you run it on empty all the time-the pump overheats and wears out quicker.

Sometimes you can temprarily get them working again by banging on the tank with a piece of wood (fairly heavy like a 2x4). The mechanical shock is usually enough to get the pump going if you get stranded. How can you tell a fuel pump is going bad on a 97 Astro van? What can be done to prevent them? Change 2 so far

Honda Accord 1986 EX 2 DR running rough and stalling. Car stalls when accelerating or starting from a stop.?

I started with a carburettor cleaner in fuel to try cleaning the carburettor. Did not work so removed the carburettor and cleaned it with brush etc as advised. Refitted it but same problems. The problem did not get worse so I think I did it OK. Then a mechanic told me to change the fuel pump. This is a carburetted car so I don't think a pump has such an active role. But I changed the pump . I have tested fuel flow by running the engine and collecting the oil in a bottle. The quantity was enough to keep it running and the engine was running on float bowl fuel at that time.

Now I think it may be an electrical problem. What should I try there? The car can be managed to be ridden for 5-6km if I keep using choke. The engine type is ET1. How to test the remaining issues? Should I change the spark leads or do I need a distributor? I have re seated the leads on plug and distribuitor side. I have also set the idle screw at around 900 rpmHonda Accord 1986 EX 2 DR running rough and stalling. Car stalls when accelerating or starting from a stop.?
Definitely sounds like a carburetor problem. Probably a bad accelr8r pump. With the car off look down the carb throat and roll the throttle open. It should shoot out a SOLID STREAM of gas from the moment the throttle is moved. Anything less than that is causing a problem.Honda Accord 1986 EX 2 DR running rough and stalling. How to change fuel filter in 2001 Blazer

We just replaced the fuel pump and now the car loses power when driving and you have to floor the gas for it to go. Went and had the codes ran and it says too much air in the fuel!

Suggestion was to change the fuel filter and we found it but how in the world do we get the old one out? Looks like a lot of stuff in the way.

Also, would a defective fuel pump cause this problem as well as when you turn the car on there is a loud humming sound by the fuel tank. Never heard that before either.

I started to lose power a couple of weeks ago now it turns over but won't start. I changed the fuel filter and don't really know where to go from here...PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Thank youHow can I locate the fuel pump on a 1997 Ford Taurus?
You can check for good fuel pressure( 30 - 40 psi) at that little valve on your fuel rail. The easiest way to change the fuel pump is to cut through the floor under your backseat.Even though they charge you for removing the tank, some shops do take this short cut. Near the middle a 6%26quot; x 6%26quot; three sided cutout will allow you to peel the floor back.No need to drain the tank. Like most parts, QUALITY matters more than cost. =^ ) Good LuckHow can I locate the fuel pump on a 1997 Ford Taurus?
The fuel pump on a taurus is located in the gas tank under the trunk of the car. Before you go through the trouble of pulling the tank do a simple test first to see if it's working. Stand by the fuel door while you have a freind just turn on the car. You should be able to hear a humming noise when the key is turned on.

If you do great, it's working. If not you'll need to check the relay under the hood first to see if it's good. This can be done with a test light. Or you can just replace it. It's about a $20 part and super easy to change. If the relay is good then you'll have to replace the fuel pump. Unless you know what you are doing take it to a professional. Have the car diagnosed before you replace a fuel pump. Usually* there is no warning when a fuel pump goes bad. no loss of power weeks in advance. Throttle Position Sensors and Idle Air Controllers are common problems and much less expensive as well as easier to replace. on my probe I just pull out this yellow box at the fusebox but this sable has a fuel pump shutoff in th trunk.I don't know how to change this oneI want to change the fuel filter on a 93 merc sable 3.0 help?
The fuel shut off disables the pump in the event of an accident you need not fool with this for a filter replacement. If you want to release the pressure, just go to the schrader valve on the fuel injector rail. It looks like an air valve. Wrap it with alarge cloth and take a small screw driver and push in the valve core. Alot of pressure there so keep your face out of the way.I want to change the fuel filter on a 93 merc sable 3.0 help?

http://autorepair.about.com/cs/doityoursI want to change the fuel filter on a 93 merc sable 3.0 help?
You don't even need to touch the shut off relay, besides, that is in the event of a wreck. If inertia is applied in force, it triggers the switch to turn off fuel. Once the ignition is off, bleead the pressure out by depressing the tire like valve on the fuel rail. Change the filter and then turning the key on will repressurize it.

Good LuckI want to change the fuel filter on a 93 merc sable 3.0 help?
After you shut off the car, lift the hood. On the fuel rail assembly where the injectors come from and you should find a valve that looks like a valve stem you see in a tire. Press the steel relief pin in the middle of it in and gasoline will squirt out and relieve the pressure.

It's called a pressure relief valve. The best way to relieve it is to place an old rag over while you push the pin in.

You're going to have some gasoline run out of the fuel line when you take the old filter off anyway, so use a catch pan.

You don't need to fool with that safety shutoff switch. It's a safety device and if you trigger it manually it might fail in the event of an accident.

Finally, if you're going to work on your own cars, invest in the repair manual sold for that year make and model of car. The name of the manual is Hayne's or Chilton's. Hayne's manuals are better. They tell you step by step how to properly make repairs just like this one, and much more.

They cost about twenty dollars but they are a wise investment.

How do you take off the White quick connect fittings on the automobile fuel pump lines?

I'm trying to change put my fuel filter on a 2003 Kia spectra. The 3 lines connecting to the filter have what look like white, push-in quick connect fittings. I need to know how to remove them without damaging the lines. Then, if there are any tricks to re-installing them...please help???

JWHow do you take off the White quick connect fittings on the automobile fuel pump lines?
Ok what you need is the tools to do it with.

Thy are the quick disconnect fuel line tools, and you can get them from Auto-Zone.

Thy come in a nice houlder and there is 6 or 8. Thy come in different sizes for the different size fuel lines.

Insert the tool and pull gently on the line and it will come apart

What is inside is a small clip that grabs the line and when you insert the tool it moves this clip aside and the line comes apart.

To reconnect just push the 2 fittings together untill thy click. Then pull to be shure it is connected.

    Thanks for your question

Changing an in tank fuel pump but I can't get the rubber hoses off to drop the tank.?

How would I dislodge these old stuck rubber hoses. The vehicle is a 1997 and I believe these are original. The two hoses connect the filler neck to the tank and are about 5 inches long. I would just cut them off and replace them but they cost about $70 to replace if I could find them, several sites have told me they have been discontinued. Any ideas?Changing an in tank fuel pump but I can%26039;t get the rubber hoses off to drop the tank.?
Im betting you need a special tool for releasing the hose from the inlet end. These tools can be picked up at a reasonable price at your parts store, just tell them what make car your working on and they can fix you up. If its a hose clamp type just take a small screw driver and force it in between the hose and metal pipe in several areas to loosen it up so that you can brake it free, watch out for your fingers so as you don't poke a hole in them in the process. You should be able to drop the tank far enough to do this.Changing an in tank fuel pump but I can%26039;t get the rubber hoses off to drop the tank.?

  • Saab 1992 2.3 l 16 v will not fire, turns over. was run ruff at low speeds change fuel regular & filter?

I can smell gas when I try to start the Saab. From what I have read the fuel pump is a good thing to start with for replacement. I do not have a good means of checking. I do not want to replace I have never replaced one. To check if the fuel pump is bad, open up your fuse box and find the fuse for fuel pump and hazard warning lights. Pull them both out. Now get a small piece of insulated wire (18awg,like from a speaker) strip a half inch on both ends,

then jump the two empty fuse blocks together. You should hear the pump turn on, if you don't, it could be the problem.Saab 1992 2.3 l 16 v will not fire, turns over. was run ruff at low speeds change fuel regular %26amp; filter?
It sounds like you fouled the plugs.Pull the plugs and inspect them.If you are smelling gas when you turn the car over ,fuel delivery is not a problem. If the injector nozzles are getting plugged ,they would cause rough idle and plug fouling.Check the plugs for wetness (flooding)black deposits(carbon fouling from rich mixture).Replace the plugs and clean the injectors(fuel additive)It is a good idea to inspect the air filter at this time, and replace it if required.

How do I increase the life of my car?

I have a 2000 Chevy Malibu LS with 134,300 miles on it.

I recently had a %26quot;tune-up%26quot; which involved changing out the plugs and wires. Does this increase the life of the car? What else can I do to increase the life of my car (besides belt changes, fluid flushes, oil changes, fuel filter and oil filter changes, and other routine maintenance)? I want this car to last until 200,000 or even beyond. The only problems I've had with it have been relatively minor (fuel pump needed changed and turn signals needed to be replaced which was on a recall and I had both done for free; something with the radiator pump or something the other needed to be replaced, which was just a $30 job; and I think that's all that's really gone wrong.)How do I increase the life of my car?
In order to make your car last a long time, you need to make sure you get regular oil changes (including the oil filter). Another thing that helps is keeping it clean. I suggest washing your car at least once every two or three weeks. About every 3 washes, make sure you wax it. Paste wax is the easiest to work with in this application. Make sure you go by the book and have regular mantinence at the scheduled intervals. I would also make sure te tires have the proper amount of pressure in them to keep those last as long as they can. Depending on where you live during the colder winter months, make sure you let your car warm up for at least 5 minutes!! It is very hard on an ice cold engine to run in winter conditions! Other than that, make sure you know how your car runs. Also %26quot;listen%26quot; to your car. That way if something goes wrong, you can hear or feel it on the wheel. How do I increase the life of my car?
The car will last as long as you keep doing the maintenance. At somepoint the cost of the maintenance isn't justified. Why put $1500 in repairs towards a car that isn't worth $1500?

You should know what the value of the car is, then decide if fixing it is a good use of your money.

Most cars get to a point where the high $ repairs start coming in constantly, at that point your more or less making a car payment anyway...

I have 1999 Nissan Maxima with 155K miles on it. It's getting to that point now. Just invested $2K in service + brakes, now it needs fuel injectors for another $1K. The trade-in value is just over $3K, when do I say uncle? How do I increase the life of my car?
depending on the make of the auto some cars will surpass 200,000 miles quite easily. Not knowing the make or model of your car I would say your on the right track all ready with your regular ,routine maintenance program.Changing motor oil is one of the most important and vital things you can do. However you can make a huge difference in the vehicles life expediency,by the way you drive it.I mean if you let it warm up in the morning or at the beginning of your commute, this will make your engine happy. Also after your commute let your engine idle for a few minutes, before shutting it off. This will let the hot engine cool and reduce wear and tear on moving parts and sealing components Heavy or hard acceleration is kind of rough on an engine as well as the transmission. This too should be avoided,as well as hard deceleration or coming to a sudden stop from a high speed. Have you ever heard the phrase yep this vehicle is a real cream puff, all highway miles on her, perhaps during a sale of a vehicle? There is a big difference in highway miles vs stop and go city traffic miles on a vehicle. I would stay away from any oil additives like prolong engine treatment or slick 50 to name a couple. These oil additives are not at all necessary if you take care and use common sense, which you seem to already have.I think your on the right track alright and should be fine.Good Luck Drive Safe

How do I replace my fuel filter on my 1990 Ford Bronco?

As of lately, my Bronco takes some time to get started. It usually takes about a total of 5-15 secs to start. Once it has been running for a while though and I start it soon after it was running, its starts no problem. I believe it is the fuel pump or maybe the fuel filter that is causing this problem. Is it very difficult to change the pump? Would I need to take off the fuel tank to get to it? The Bronco has the V8 302 motor. Thank you!How do I replace my fuel filter on my 1990 Ford Bronco?
You have two fuel filters in that vehicle. The one that usually gets changed is along the rail on the drivers side underneath the vehicle. If you are going to do it yourself be sure to relieve the pressure first. good luckHow do I replace my fuel filter on my 1990 Ford Bronco?

Do i have to decompress the system to change the fuel filter?

how bad will it spray if i just loosen the fittings without decompressing the fuel line first?

I can't find the fuel pump relay and do the: start motor, pull relay, let engine die and fuel line decompress - thing before replacing the filter.Do i have to decompress the system to change the fuel filter?
Disconnect battery terminal first. If there is no pressure discharge valve around fuel injector rail, then use a rag or towel around the fuel filter joint and slacken pipe nut gently (anticlockwise) and release pressure. it will only take 5 to 10 seconds to reduce the fuel pressure. the correct way is to push in the schrader valve located on your fuel rail. it looks like an air stem on a tire. remove the cap and depress the pin in the middle. be careful; use a towel to contain the spray and wear glasses to protect your eyes (i learned the hard way once)Do i have to decompress the system to change the fuel filter?

How do you test a fuel pressure regulator? Would the O-rings have a part in messing w/ timing?

My 2002 Cavalier is not running the same as before I changed the fuel pump and fuel filter, I also got new spark pluggs, and an o2 sensor, cleaned the air filter also. What should I check for next? It starts and idles, but when you drive it, it seems to run out of gas.How do you test a fuel pressure regulator? Would the O-rings have a part in messing w/ timing?
Well, you've done a lot. O-rings will not mess with timing, that is mostly controlled by computer now though some may still be somewhat mechanical. You say it doesn't run the same as before you changed your fuel pump %26amp; filter and I surmise that you've tried the other things in response to that in an attempt to fix the problem. So, if that's the case, then I would look more at your fuel pump %26amp; filter, even though they were just replaced, as your problem occured after their replacement.

You say it seems to run out of gas, this could indicate that the fuel pump is: not the correct one, not installed correctly, defective, tubing that connects it inside tank is damaged (has a hole, kinked, not securely attached, clogged, etc.), or possibly your fuel line hose is pinched between fuel tank and car body/frame when you put it back.

Your fuel filter could also be installed incorrectly or clogged from possible debris from changing fuel pump.

At any rate it sounds like you are not getting the proper flow/pressure of gas that you should. A pressure test of your fuel system will probably show that you are losing pressure at higher RPM's than at idle which will not necessarily point to anything specific other than it is low. You would need further diagnostic testing to determine the most likely cause.

Best of luck. Hopefully I've given you some things to think and check on.How do you test a fuel pressure regulator? Would the O-rings have a part in messing w/ timing?
Attach a fuel pressure Gage to the feed line and unplug the vacuum line from the regulator while the car is running. the pressure should increase from about 40-45 lbs. to approx. 10 to15lbs. higher. o-rings have nothing to do with timing.

Fuel pump problems. To see if you have a pump or crank position sensor bad do this, turn the key on and see if you hear the pump prime, if not use a can of starting fluid and have someone spray the fluid in the air cleaner while you start it, If it starts and then quits running when your partner stops spraying, YOUR PUMP IS BAD., or fuel filter is clogged, you should check the filter first since the fuel filter should be replaced EVERY 10-12 thousand miles. if you listen to the manual or dealer recommendations you will be replacing fuel pumps on a regular basis. and folks wonder why they go out.

Pumps are expensive and not easy to get to unless you have a DODGE then the filters are on the pump assembly IN THE TANK.

Now if the car doesn't start with the fluid. just sits there and cranks but wont fire, you prob have a crankshaft position sensor bad. That is what tells your coils and spark plugs to fire..

Pull 2 plug wires at opposite ends of the engine. Insert a screwdriver into the end of the wire and HOLDING THE HANDLE, hold the end of the driver over a metal part of the engine while someone turns the key. Yo should see a fairly bright blueish white spark. On both of them. If not, you have something wrong in the ignition system. Either bad cap, rotor, coil packs or CPS. If yo have spark, it is time to check fuel.

Change the fuel filter. It sounds like you have spark, but insufficient fuel pressure. After changing the fuel filter, try it. See if it starts.

If not, you will need a fuel pressure gauge and a buddy. Have the buddy crank it over while you have the pressure gauge on the injector rail. You should see about 30PSI or more. Any less and you need to find the test point before the pressure regulator. If you have good pressure after the regulator, this means your pressure regulator has gone bad and needs to be replaced.

If you have poor pressure before the regulator, then your pump has gone bad. The fuel pump is an in-tank model. Hopefully there is an access hatch under your spare tire in the trunk. If not, you will have to remove the fuel tank. And that is a whole nother can of worms.

You have to jack the vehicle up, at least in the rear. Loosen the fill tube at the top. Check clearance all around. There are usually two straps holding the tank in, with a bolt assembly on one side. Undo the bolts slowly and carefully and lower the tank down, making sure not to stretch wires or tubes. At the top of the tank, you will see some wires and a hose. This is the inlet/outlet. There might be two hoses. Usually it is a cam-type locking ring. Being careful to not produce a spark, unlock the ring by turning it counter-clockwise. Carefully pull the assembly off the top of the tank. Pump replacement should be fairly straightforward.

There should be a test port on the fuel rail, kinda like a tire inflation valve. Cycle the key on and off 3-4 times. Then carefully press the valve (like letting air out of a tire) to see if there is pressure.

Careful you don't get gas everywhere, or in your eyes.Car wont start. I think it may be the fuel pump. How can i tell?
you dont know what the problem is.and a w.a.g. is not the answer. take it to a shop or have an experienced person give it a go.Car wont start. I think it may be the fuel pump. How can i tell?
The only sure way is to have the fuel pressure checked. A lower than normal pressure would indicate a bad fuel pump.

edit: If you got 150k miles out of that pump, you got your money's worth out of it. Most of the time they go out at around 100k miles.

  • How can I check a new fuel pump to make sure it is working?

I have a 89 Chevy S10(2.5) that it's been sitting in the back yard for a long time. It has always run noisy and rough. I managed to get it to start but died on me the next day. I changed the fuel pump and it started right back up and run for one day, the next day it died again and sounds like it could be fuel. Engine turns but it wont start. Some times it does start but feels like it doesn't get any fuel and dies.

Well, I just want to know how can I check to see if the new pump I installed is working? When I turn the ignition on, the pump does make that sound as if it working.

Thanks...How can I check a new fuel pump to make sure it is working?
The fuel pump may indeed be working fine. The fact you pointed out that the truck has been setting a long time makes me concerned about the quality of the fuel in the tank. Fuel that sets for a long time begins to varnish and will not burn very well if at all.

If you remove the fuel cap and smell the fuel tank, does it smell like fuel? Or does it smell like a real strong varnish? If it smells really powerful like varnish, you are going to have to remove the fuel tank from the vehicle and flush out the old fuel. This presents a small problem, like what are you going to do with the old fuel? Finding someone to accept it is another story.

I would also suggest replacing the fuel filter after flushing the tank. With any luck the varnish hasn't done anything to your injector either.

Once you have established that you have good quality fuel in the tank you can check to see if you have fuel pressure. If I remember correctly the 2.5 Liter does not have a schroeder valve to hook up a fuel pressure gauge. You have to hook your fuel pressure gauge in series with the pressure line which requires a complex set of tees.

With the key on and engine off you are going to want to see between 9-13 pounds. You may have to cycle the key on and off pausing at least 10 seconds between cycles.

Now, if for whatever reason you can't get a fuel pressure gauge installed, It is a safe bet you can remove the air cleaner lid and watch the injector as it pulses fuel into the throttle body. Have an assistant crank the engine while you watch for a fuel spray. It should be a nice mist in the shape of a cone. If not then crack the fuel line where it goes into the throttle body. Cycle the key on and off and look for fuel coming out of the line while you do this.

Have you checked to make sure that your carburator has all of the parts.... one of my guy friends has a 61 ford truck that he is working on and it is doing the same. It might be the carb. I work more on fords. I've been rebuilding a 410 ( bored 351 whenzer) for a 68 mustang. How can I check a new fuel pump to make sure it is working?
Hey! Thats a good sign that it is working, now the correct fuel pressure is something different. Check your fuel filter and make sure there isn't a blockage there. As a no brainer you can always spray throttle body cleaner straight into there and then crank it and see if it's a fuel delivery problem. You can also check the fuel pressure to make sure you're getting...60 psi, I believe is what a GM needs to run on. Get back with me on that. BE more than happy to help you out. Good Luck!

I have a 99 gmc envoy, looking to change/fix an electrical fuel pump myself.l?

can someone who is experience please provide this single mom with some suggestions on how to properly drop the tank (very empty) and reconnect my new pump. desperate and dont have the money to have a mechanic fix it for me!

thank youI have a 99 gmc envoy, looking to change/fix an electrical fuel pump myself.l?
Shouldn't be that much of a problem. Two metal straps hold the tank in place. When you get under the vehicle you'll see the bolts.

The tank itself is not heavy, but a jack with a board helps. Trick is getting filler tube loose and then re-aligned whenyou go back in.

Changing pump is no problem. There's a ring that you tap counter clockwise to get the old pump out. Two electrical leads attach to connections on top of this ring as well as the feed and return lines. When I drive off the ring I use a brass hammer to prevent sparks. I'd rather err on the side of safety. Good luck, I don't think you'll have any problem. It's really a lot easier than you'd think.I have a 99 gmc envoy, looking to change/fix an electrical fuel pump myself.l?
Maybe someone else will chime in with more info, but this is from Autozone. http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker

You should buy a book for it really, that way you can use it for anything else that comes up.

I am assuming you are 100% sure it's the pump.I have a 99 gmc envoy, looking to change/fix an electrical fuel pump myself.l?
Check out the public library for repair manuals. Typically you can't check them out but you can make copies for your personal use.

Basically though, disconnect the battery, support the tank, loosen

the straps and lower the tank to disconnect fuel lines and power wire. Disconnect straps and move them to fully remove the tank.

This could be a tough task to do alone! It might be possible to not fully remove the tank.

On the tank where the pump is, there will be a ring you will need to turn to remove the pump. Clean this area of dirt, turn the ring and remove it and then remove the pump. Install new pump making certain that you get any seals in place and work backwards from there. NO SMOKING!I have a 99 gmc envoy, looking to change/fix an electrical fuel pump myself.l?
I wouldn't recommend you do it yourself esp if you have never done this before. The labour charge for the job is 2hrs ( less than $160 ).It is not worth the trouble to do it yourself and you have to consider the safety risks involved with high pressure fuel as well. Let a pro do it, its much safer. Sorry, I'm not trying to discourage you...... Good luck!!I have a 99 gmc envoy, looking to change/fix an electrical fuel pump myself.l?
I have done this more times than I care to tell you here. I do not believe it to be an easy job for someone to do with a lot of mechanical ability. That said, these tanks are uniquely shaped and quite deep so getting the truck up in the air as far as possible is essential. You said the tank is nearly empty so that helps a great deal. There are several hoses and pipes that need to be removed without being damaged or allowing dirt and crap from entering. The fuel filler and vent hoses are the two biggest hoses to be removed. These are normally held by simple hose clamps and to loosen them from their respective nipples requires some type of a probe to wiggle between to release the bond. The quick connect fittings are released using special tools that can be purchased from any auto sales company. There will be the pressure pipe that can be usually disconnected at the filter, the return pipe which is usually disconnected by first lowering the tank to get at it, and there will be at least one, possible two vent pipes for emissions control to remove. There are sometimes rock guards that have to be removed and then the two straps that actually hold the tank to the body. These tanks are plastic so the weight is not that bad, but they are very ungainly with lots of unusual angles and even with a low fuel level they tend to tip and fall. Be careful with fuel spills and from getting this stuff in your eyes. Visit the general motors website to look at the actual manual as that is where we get all our information. If that doesn't help, visit a dealer and I'm sure they will be happy to print you out the whole procedure as I would. Good Luck!!

2006 Chevorlet Cobalt sedan LS Fuel pump?

My car has 65010 miles on it. The fuel pump is making a loud hummming noise. On Mon I am going to the mechanic to get it checked out. How much does it cost for a new fuel pump? How does it work changing a fuel pump in my car? What are the signs of a bad fuel pump? My car runs real great and no problems driving it. I started hearing the hummimg sound 3 months ago and before that I never heard that sound. Sometimes the sound gets loud, but than soft and so on. Is it good to get it replaced at a chevorlet dealer or regular auto mechanic?2006 Chevorlet Cobalt sedan LS Fuel pump?
Sometimes, a hum like this is due to a clogging fuel filter. It can restrict the proper flow of fuel both to the engine and back to the tank. (Fuel injected cars have TWO fuel lines). Fuel pumps, in general, either work, or don't work. A noisy one can also indicate that the tank filter is clogging up. On most American cars, to change the pump you must drop the tank. I would consult with several shops before choosing one to fix this. I would start with the dealer and get an estimate. Also, I would ask if there is a recall on this part, you never know. There could be an extended %26quot;secret%26quot; warranty issue here. NHTSA might be helpful as a guideline. They saved me $800 on a %26quot;secret%26quot; GM defective engine recall, years ago. Good Luck!! Also, you should be using only top tier gasolines, which have adequate lubricating qualities, and fuels which do not have any methanol (rubber dissolving) components. Many fuel pumps go bad from poor fuel quality.

Need fuel pump for 99 chevy suburban very custom and high performance. 454 supercharged. what fuel pump to use?

I have a 1999 chevrolet 3/4 ton four wheel drive suburban. It has the 7.4 (454) with supercharger. This truck is very high performance. I have changed my fuel pump twice now and nothing can keep up. The first one I put on was just a stock GM fuel pump....it worked as long as you did not want to go fast...lol...so then I tried a high performance OEM...It would not even idle...so now what? I'm actually at a loss. I really don't want to take it to a shop for a $1,500 bill just to tell me which one to use...so if you have had this problem or know how to fix it please tell me!!! Thanks a bunch

A holley black pump works great ,but it doesn't sound like it could be just the fuel pump problem you have regulators and injectors and also the size of the hard line to factor in.I would mount a gauge on the shrader valve and monitor the amount of pressure you are getting to make sure it meets the supercharger requirements. 32-38 lb should be fine.Need fuel pump for 99 chevy suburban very custom and high performance. 454 supercharged. what fuel pump to use?

Sounds like you have an additional issue, even a stock pump will provide enough fuel at idle, it should only be at high rpm that the motor would starve. As stated above you may need to up grade the rest of your fuel system (injectors).

  • Fuel pump replacement..?

hello all! used to be on here as damiensblacksvt. i just bought a 98 svt contour and the fuel pump needs replacing. i have the pump but i have a question about the red and white fuel connectors. they are very difficult to remove, and the plastic pieces that pop on and off break very easily. how to i remove these 2 connections wihout breaking them? furthermore how do i remove the aluminum cap to get access to the fuel pump without purchasing the SPECIAL WRENCH that ford says you need? this car wants to start, but i need to get this done and i know that many guys are knowledgable on svt contours on this forum. i was hoping that someone could give me some pointers on how i can do this myself. i have alot of info on svt contours but have never changed a fuel pump in one before. any help would be great guys!

    Fuel pump replacement..?
More often than not, you can remove the retaining ring by alternately, and gently, hammering away at the tabs to rotate it. You will need a new O ring seal since the old one will have expanded and it won't seat back into place.

On the connectors, you must release the small tab that fits into the hole on the spade connector.Fuel pump replacement..?
there is a lock ring holding the sending unit down use a screw driver and tap it until it unlocks then there should be some lock to keep the connector from coming loose take that off and remove the connector

Fuel (pump?) problem on GMC Sierra truck?

    I have a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500.

The truck had stopped, and it appeared to be the fuel sending unit

That unit is a canister containing the fule pump as well, and goes for about $400 retail.

To get the truck back on the road temporarily,

We changed the fuel pump (not the whole canister) and %26quot;hot wired%26quot; the fuel pump to a switched ignition 12v (fused) source.

The first time this was done, it worked fine for 1 week

    (the pump burned out) .

We bought a new fuel pump and tried again.

This time, its working, but it takes 3-4 cranks before it starts.

It seems that the fuel pressure must be off, but we have no way to verify this.

    1) What does the sending unit do ?

    2) How many volts is the fuel pump?

(i checked the voltage at the sending unit and it was only 5 volts)

Any ideas for a solution ?Fuel (pump?) problem on GMC Sierra truck?
It's not the sending unit. All the sending unit does is control the fuel gauge. It looks like a toilet bowl ball...it measures the level of the fluid in the tank...same thing for the sender...it floats in the tank and measures the level of the fuel.Fuel (pump?) problem on GMC Sierra truck?
you say it works ok now but you have to crank it over before it starts ? did you bleed the air out of the lines and change the fuel filter ?Fuel (pump?) problem on GMC Sierra truck?
Don't remember that vehicle having one , but it sounds like a puller fuel pump . Think if you check , you also have a pusher pump in the tank . also found this on the web :Really sounds like a fuel pump to me.

The Z motor pumps were really bad. This is what I think you should do.

Take your vehicle to a GMC dealership and have them run a VIS. This will tell them if unit is eligable for a recall they had in 2002 model vehicles for the fuel pump connector.

If you have already had it done, have them, or your usual mechanic hook a fuel pressure gauge to the unit and drive it around until or while it acts up.

If you see the fuel pressure slowly dropping off, it is the pump

How can I test a fuel pump in a 97 Chevy Express Van?

I have a 97 Chevy Express that just stalled out on me. The engine cranks when I turn the key but sounds like it's not getting any fuel. I changed the fuel filter, I can hear the fuel pump relay %26quot;click%26quot; on when turn the ignition key. I'm guessing maybe the fuel pump is bad. Since it's in the gas tank, I'd like to be able to be sure of that before tackling that job. OR is there another possiility that could be preventing it from starting? How can I test a fuel pump in a 97 Chevy Express Van?
The only way to know is to put a pressure guage on the fuel rail. You may get fuel by pressing the valve but you have no way of knowing if it has the correct pressure.

You did not say what engine you have, but the 5.7L needs 60 to 66 psi.How can I test a fuel pump in a 97 Chevy Express Van?
turn the key to the %26quot;on%26quot; position without turning over, go back to the tank and listen for a whine sound, if you dont hear that sound the pump is dead. also on the engine there is a fuel rail, on the rail there is a schrader valve, looks like a bike tire valve. put on safety glasses and depress the needle in the valve and hold while the key is on, this should let you bleed down the pressure. turn off for a couple seconds, then turn on and recheck for pressure, if you have high pressure again, the pump is ok.

I was going to say the same thing that Bob b said. Iwas thinking maybe the fuel shut out switch was'nt all the way in. it's going to behind one of the kick panels ,when you find it make sure that the RED button is push down .When you turn the key on do you hear the pump come on, if so, then where you take the fuel filter out , is there some gas for a few seconds .if so , that all you will get until it is hooked back up , if your getting any gas at the fuel filter when you turn on the key that's all your going to get. .The pump want keep pumping fuel until it is hooked back up.The pump is not made to pump when the line's are unhooked03 s10 fuel pump any idea (puzzeled)
is there power at the pump? if so can you %26quot;hear the pump%26quot; if it is mounted in tank.If the pump is pumping there could be an issue with the plumbing where the pump is pumping and the fuel is not being delivered to the lines and is simply being circulated in the tank. remove the pump again and ensure the lines are connected properly and there is no blockage and there are no kinks in any lines, make sure the fuel filter is not installed backwards as well, which is a common error.03 s10 fuel pump any idea (puzzeled)

How do I go about changing the fuel pump on my 1995 Chryler LHS? Any tips/helpful hints appreciated.?

My car was fine, then one day when I started it I had trouble. It ran fine for a few seconds, then began running rough, and within 2 blocks had gotten so rough it sputtered and died. It hasn't started since, but it does crank. I don't hear the fuel pump coming on. I replaced the fuel pump relay already but need to do the fuel pump itself I guess. That's the only thing I can think it might be. I'm a little leary of working around the gas tank, but I have to do this myself. I don't have a manual, so any helpful tips would be appreciated. Thanks. How do I go about changing the fuel pump on my 1995 Chryler LHS? Any tips/helpful hints appreciated.?
Hopefully there's not a lot of fuel in the tank as the straps have to come off around the tank and it has to be lowered safely to disconnect the wiring and hoses from the top center of the tank. If there is a lot of fuel in the tank unfortunately you can't stick a hose in the fuel opening to siphon it out. The marvelous engineers have installed an internal blocking gate so people can't steal the fuel by trying to siphoning it out.

Simply look for a large rubber hose between the tank and the first piece of metal tubing that leads to the fill pipe on the outside if the car. Disconnect the hose as close to the tank as possible an siphon all the gas you can into a lawnmower plastic gas can.

There is a large square fitting on the top that will require a large pair of water pump pliers or a pipe wrench to unscrew counterclockwise. The fuel pump and the tank float will lift out as a unit. How do I go about changing the fuel pump on my 1995 Chryler LHS? Any tips/helpful hints appreciated.?
You need to put the car on jack stands or a lift.you need to put a jack under the gas tank. There should be some clamps along the frame rail you will need to get off of the metal gas line to free it so it will not bend so much when you drop the gas tank.then take the bolts out of the gas straps.they will just hang there There will be 2 Rubber Hoses: the filler hose and the breather hose, you will need to take off.be prepared for gas from the gas lines.get a rag to push into the filler hose hole. You may need to remove the bolts by the gas cap to help get the gas tank down to get to the filler hose. You should lower the gas tank just enough to get the smaller gas lines on top of the tank, once there off ,you can finish lowering. There will be a metal ring on top of the tank with maybe three teeth sticking up.you will need a punch and a hammer,or something to hit it with to spin the ring around.once the ring is out when you pull the pump out there will be a rubber ring, make sure its ok.be careful when pulling out the pump assembly.once you replace the pump..then just do everything in reverse. How do I go about changing the fuel pump on my 1995 Chryler LHS? Any tips/helpful hints appreciated.?
you will have to lower the gas tank out of the car to replace the fuel pump as it's in the tank.

Where is the fuel pump on a 1996 GMC sonoma?

I am having problems starting my truck. We have tried to change the fuel filter but it is still not starting. It will start for a few seconds if we add gas directly to the carburetor. The fuse is not blown, we checked that, the next thing we can think is the fuel pump, but we know neither where it would be or how to tell if it is working. Please Help!!!! Thank you.Where is the fuel pump on a 1996 GMC sonoma?
The fuel pump is in the tank. On the 1996 model, it is required 50 p.s.i. to start the engine. even if you hear a %26quot;buzzing noise%26quot;, the pump may still be bad. if it is not producing enough volume, or pressure. also check the fuel pump relay. it is located under the hood in a fuse/relay panel. look at the fuse/relay legend to find the relay. have someone turn the key on if the relay %26quot;clicks%26quot; it is generally good. second find the wiring harness that goes to the tank, under the truck, on the frame rail, thee will be a gray wire in that harness. probe that wire with a test light and have someone switch the key on again, the test light should burn for about 3 seconds, that will tell you that the fuel pump is getting power and the fuel pump is bad. drop the tank and replace the pump. all though, quite costly, as it only comes as a complete unit, it is the only way to fix your truck.Where is the fuel pump on a 1996 GMC sonoma?
I dunno.. I can't see it.Where is the fuel pump on a 1996 GMC sonoma?
in the fuel tank!Where is the fuel pump on a 1996 GMC sonoma?
    Probably mounted on the tank.

Take of the fuel line and see if fuel comes out, also check for a clogged filter.Where is the fuel pump on a 1996 GMC sonoma?
It is probably inside the gas tank, to see if it is working merely take the fuel line off the injector(I'm assuming it's fuel injected) and turn the motor over while someone holds the line over a bucket, if it shoots gas into it then your fuel pump is fineWhere is the fuel pump on a 1996 GMC sonoma?
You are correct if spray starting fluid into the throttle body and is running 9 times out of ten it is the fuel pump it is located in the fuel tank and will take you about an 11/2 hrs to fix drop the tank and it is on the topWhere is the fuel pump on a 1996 GMC sonoma?
As the lady said..its in the tank...... had to replace mine several months ago.... We removed the rear bed to do it... lots easier than dropping the tank...just a few wires and 6 bolts....we used a small engine lift and a nylon strap.... worked for us....Where is the fuel pump on a 1996 GMC sonoma?
it's at the front on which ever side the gas cap is. outside the tank before you get to the rear or front seat. (Dual Or Single Cab.)

raise up from the bottom of the vehicle about 6 inches.

When You Fill Up, The Fuel Should Be Alot Colder that the fuel already going throught the line, just after you fill, go to the side and have the car idling and if the fuel line is getting colder rather quickly, and/or the pump is gently wibrating, then it should be working fine.Where is the fuel pump on a 1996 GMC sonoma?
It is in the gas tank your truck needs 50 pounds of pressure in the fuel system to start. The fuel pump is a common problem on that model truck so I would bet that is the problem. I hope you don't have the tank to full it is a pain to drop the tank when it's full.

PS don't even think about smoking while you are replacing the pump.Where is the fuel pump on a 1996 GMC sonoma?
The fuel pump is in the gas tank. The entire tank will have to be removed and then the fuel pump assembly can be removed. But before you do that: The easiest test is to put a fuel pressure guage on the fuel rail and see if the fuel pump can achieve about 45 PSI of pressure, that is what is required to start these vehicles.Where is the fuel pump on a 1996 GMC sonoma?
The fuel pump assembly is located inside of the fuel tank. The tank will have to be removed for service of the pump. A way to check for low fuel pressure is to turn the ignition key on and off 2 to 3 times to prime the fuel rail then see if it will start. You should here a buzzing every time you turn the key on. If not then either the pump has failed completely or more likely has a broken wire in the harness on top of the tank.Where is the fuel pump on a 1996 GMC sonoma?
When you have your tank dropped to get this repaired, be sure that your mechanic checks all the contact points. I had a loose ground wire on my fuel pump that drove me crazy because it worked SOMETIMES.

i have a 6 cylinder jeep cherokee larado. we just changed the fuel pump 2 weeks ago. now its getting harder to start and i was told it seems like no fuel or very little fuel is getting to the engine compartment so i've been told it needs a fuel pressure regulator. now, can somebody please tell me were its located on a 1990 jeep, and how do i put on a new one. i got some sensors and things off another jeep motor i saved. i might have one. but i dont know were to look or anything to fix it....if anyone can help, thanks......Were is the fuel pressure regulator located on a 1990 jeep cherokee larado and how do i change it?
On the drivers side of the engine..just to YOUR right of the valve cover looking backwards, you will see the fuel rail with each injector connected to it.

Just under your head at the front of the engine nearest you on that rail is a round valve that the fuel return comes from. It is around 2%26quot; diameter and small black vacuum line goint to it.

    That is the regulator.

I REALLY doubt this is a problem as you decribe. Had two leak in 15 years time,,but not do this as you describe..More concerned about the new pump!!!

Check with your auto parts store and you can perhaps borrow a fuel pressure gauge. The pressure test point is a Schroeder valve..Kind of like a tire port in the center of the fuel rail. DO NOT USE A TIRE Gauge!! While it MIGHT work,,it is dangerous due to leaking 39 psi fuel.

Engine at idle you should see around 30 psi,Disconnect the vacuum line and it should read right around 39 psi.

    Good Luck

  • How can I tell if my fuel pump is bad?

I have a 98 4 cyl ford contour se, In the past month it has died 3 times just at random, and today when I went to start it, it started fine went forward about 5 feet then died. Now when I try to start it, it won't start kind of like it's out of gas. I removed the back seat so I could access the pump and when i start the key it sounds like the pump starts for 2 seconds then turns off, which makes me think it's not the fuel pump. I changed the fuel filter about a month ago so that shouldn't be the problem. Any ideas? How can I tell if my fuel pump is bad?
    Pressure test.

    Volume test.

And if you want to be really, really sure it's OK, hook it up to an oscilloscope.

do you have any fuel pressure when it is on ? if not then the fuel pumpHow can I tell if my fuel pump is bad?
ignition module maybeHow can I tell if my fuel pump is bad?
Do a feul pump test if you dont have any reading after test replace it.How can I tell if my fuel pump is bad?
You use a fuel pressure guage. That way you know exactly how it's working in 2 seconds without any monkeying around.

Most people would rather monkey around with a car, replacing random parts, than make a diagnostic measurement, though. Don't you be that way, okay? How can I tell if my fuel pump is bad?
You can rent a fuel pressure tester from napa or autozone for next to nothing test your fuel pressure under the hood on the fuel rail it should have a service port. The pump coming on then shutting off when the key is turned is normal just a prime cycle when the engine is running the pump will remain on. Also may want to have your ignition module checked they can check it for you at any parts store im sure hope this helps. How can I tell if my fuel pump is bad?
ok a few ways to check it, fuel gauge pressure tester (harbor freight will do) you should have 40psi at almost all times and under load like 50-60psi... and if it dives to 5-10psi the pump is weak... Also if you get it to die push on the schrader valve on the fuel line while cranking .. or connect gauge and see if you have 0psi... if you see no fuel pressure check power and ground circuit's if they are good. its your pump 100%. ... or you could jsut shotgun a fuel pump like 90% of techs will do now days then figure out its the fuel pump relay. How can I tell if my fuel pump is bad?
you asked this question yesterday, you should review the answers....

check fuel pressure with pressure test. if out of spec it may be on its way out. it could also be your fuel pump relay. if you have no tools, push in the valve at the test port, with a rag around it, fuel should come out.

if fuel comes out, check for spark (this should be test one, since you'll have fuel around engine bay) remove wire from sparkplug and have an assistant crank it over. no spark? then you have isolated your problem. report back. these tests will only take you 5 minutes. How can I tell if my fuel pump is bad?
Take the hose going to the motor from the fuel pump off and turn the motor over and if fuel comes out the pump is good. How can I tell if my fuel pump is bad?
I would not focus only on the fuel pump being the problem. With a crank/no start problem, there could be many possible causes. Since the pump ran 2 seconds to pressurize the system, we know it's not the fuse, relay or inertia switch. Even if you are getting fuel at the rail, it doesn't mean the injectors are firing. The last time I saw this on a 98 Ford 4 cyl, the teeth at the crank were worn off on the timing belt. Anyway, chances are good, the pump is sending enough volume since these cars don't require much to fire. A little starter fluid can get them to fire if there is adequate spark available.

I would check the IAC(Idle Air Control) motor. It is very common for these to go bad or the air path to become clogged. Press the gas pedal to the floor and attempt to start the vehicle. This puts the car in a lean mode and see if it fires. If it does and stays running with the throttle plate partially open, then you might need a new IAC motor.

I would check if the plugs are firing. You can either use a spark tester(about $5.00) or crank the engine and then pull a plug. If the plug is wet, black and smells like fuel, you know a few things. The injectors are firing and the plug is probably not sparking. This could be either the coil, module, crank sensor or fuse that powers the module or coil.

The engine only needs fuel, spark, air and compression to fire. Figuring out which one isnt the difficult part. It is usually the why that is the difficult part. Check each area as best you can.
