How do you change the fuel pump on a Chevy 235 6 cylinder?

I have an cool old 57 Chevy with a straight 6 235. It needs a fuel pump and I thought this was an easy replacement. However, I talked with a couple of guys that said something about a rod that needs to be held in place during the change process...but that it may not be like that on my engine? How do I know if there is a rod, and is there a good way to go about this change? How do you change the fuel pump on a Chevy 235 6 cylinder?
The way I remember, the 6 cylinder engines drove the pump directly off of camshaft.

The v-8's had a shaft because it was so far to the camshaft. It's usually the stuff that happened yesterday that I forget.......How do you change the fuel pump on a Chevy 235 6 cylinder?
The rod will be there, as it drives the fuel pump. Take off the fuel lines and undo the 2 bolts that hold the pump to the block. After you clean up the gasket surface and get ready to put the new pump on, the rod will probably have fallen down. It's a slippery thing to push up and you have to kind of slip the pump in between it to reinstall. It.s not hard just frustrating sometimes. NO 6 CYL CHEVROLETS EVER USED A FUEL PUMP ROD. ONLY V8 DID...................Just unbolt the old pump and bolt the new one on. ..........mdHow do you change the fuel pump on a Chevy 235 6 cylinder?
considering what %26quot;old guy%26quot; said might i recommend you acquire a extendable magnet like you would use to fetch a nut you dropped to some in-accessible place on engine? hold rod up with it while u slip pump in place, easier to work around than your own fingers. How do you change the fuel pump on a Chevy 235 6 cylinder?
i think the old canadian mechanic hit the nail on the head.if the fuel pump is mounted to the motor then there is a rod to drive it for sure.no big deal,id rather change 10 of your fuel pumps rather than change 1 that is inside the gas tank. How do you change the fuel pump on a Chevy 235 6 cylinder?
old guy 64 is right about everything but I want to add that what I do is put a glob of axle grease on your finger and push that rod upward and put that glob of grease on the end of that rod and it will hold it up out of the way long enough for you get the new pump in place before it falls back down. How do you change the fuel pump on a Chevy 235 6 cylinder?
The rod is very slippery, after removing old pump and cleaning mating surface and putting a new gasket in place use a thin pair of needle nose pliers and grab the the rod and move it up. Then take the new fuel pump and put the lever that goes into the hole under the rod. Remove pliers and line up the bolt holes and tighten it up.
