You can check for good fuel pressure( 30 - 40 psi) at that little valve on your fuel rail. The easiest way to change the fuel pump is to cut through the floor under your backseat.Even though they charge you for removing the tank, some shops do take this short cut. Near the middle a 6%26quot; x 6%26quot; three sided cutout will allow you to peel the floor back.No need to drain the tank. Like most parts, QUALITY matters more than cost. =^ ) Good LuckHow can I locate the fuel pump on a 1997 Ford Taurus?
The fuel pump on a taurus is located in the gas tank under the trunk of the car. Before you go through the trouble of pulling the tank do a simple test first to see if it's working. Stand by the fuel door while you have a freind just turn on the car. You should be able to hear a humming noise when the key is turned on.

If you do great, it's working. If not you'll need to check the relay under the hood first to see if it's good. This can be done with a test light. Or you can just replace it. It's about a $20 part and super easy to change. If the relay is good then you'll have to replace the fuel pump. Unless you know what you are doing take it to a professional. Accidentaly blowing up your car is not a good or cheap thing to do.How can I locate the fuel pump on a 1997 Ford Taurus?

Have the car diagnosed before you replace a fuel pump. Usually* there is no warning when a fuel pump goes bad. no loss of power weeks in advance. Throttle Position Sensors and Idle Air Controllers are common problems and much less expensive as well as easier to replace. A tow bill and an hour of diagnostics is still cheaper than a fuel pump for a taurus. How can I locate the fuel pump on a 1997 Ford Taurus?
